Toyacoyah

Toyacoyah is a Chicago-based drum & bass and jungle DJ and vinyl selector, and an enrolled member of the Comanche Nation whose stage name means “Returning from the War.” She began DJing a drum & bass radio show at the University of Oklahoma in the late 1990s, became an original resident of Austin’s liquid-funk night Mental Note, and played jungle, liquid funk, footwork and 160bpm bass across Texas, Colorado, California and Brazil before settling in Chicago. In the Midwest she performs with the Proper Chicago and dnbid crews and speaks openly about being one of the few Indigenous artists in electronic music, drawing parallels between pow-wow percussion and rave culture. With Proper she has played Emporium Wicker Park and Debonair Social Club alongside Alcove, LO!, Diskokitty and Mega Mike.
